A pub in north Wales was told by police to take down a notice which said “Polite notice- positively no travellers”.
North Wales Police assistant chief constable Ian Shannon was on a licensing visit when he saw the notice.
The sign was described as “bigoted and unpleasant” and the pub owner did not recognise that the sign was “inappropriate”.
The issue was taken to the Equality and Human Rights Commission and the sign was then taken down.
The pub has not been named, but it is believed to be in the Flintshire or Wrexham area. The police officer made mention of the violence carried out against Gypsies and travellers in Italy recently.
Would there have been such a reaction if the pub had shown a notice saying “no jeans” or “no football tops”? That is just as discriminatory.
