One of the worst pieces of legislation ever introduced in the UK has reared its ugly head again. The Human Rights Act has now been quoted as a reason to free some of the UK’s most dangerous criminals.
Hundreds of dangerous criminals could now be freed early, as keeping them jailed is in breach of their human rights. The criminals could be released even if Justice Secretary Jack Straw believes they are a danger to the public – previously the Justice Secretary, and before that the Home Secretary, could block a criminal’s release if a criminal was believed to still pose a danger to the public.
This comes about after a legal challenge by Wayne Black, who was sentenced to 24 years imprisonment for a string of offences including robbery and kidnap. He was recommended for parole in 2006 but this was blocked by the Home Secretary, who said that he still posed a danger.
The Appeal Court ruled that this was incompatible with the Human Rights Act.
The Human Rights Act should either be scrapped immediately, or cease to be used in cases where criminals can claim human rights abuses. This Act protects the criminals and no one else.
