The National Union of Teachers (NUT), the largest of the teaching unions, said that state schools should be forced to open their doors to Islamic preachers to teach children the Koran. The union also said that religious schools, which are mostly Christian, should admit pupils of other faiths.
The union believes that allowing imams to preach in schools would be a good way to reunite divided communities.
One Conservative backbencher said it was “just further appeasement for Muslim militants.”
The union also proposes private prayer facilities for Muslims in state schools, and religious assemblies, which must have a Christian character by law, should be banned.
