The Lindisfarne Gospels belong in the north east according to some people
There are renewed calls for the return of the Lindisfarne Gospels – currently in the British Library in London – to the north east of England.
The illustrated manuscripts, which were written by monks on Holy Island in 700AD, were kept in Durham cathedral for hundreds of years.
Simon Donald, who co-founded Viz has added his voice to those calling for their return.
The manuscripts are regarded as one of the most important books in history. They were produced by Eadfrith, Bishop of Lindisfarne.
A replica of the gospels is on show in the north east.
