
The mighty Avro Lancaster was the aircraft used in the Dambusters raids
On 14th March 1864, the English explorer Samuel Baker was the first European to see the lake he named Lake Albert in honour of the recently-deceased Prince Albert.
On 14th March 1945, the 617 Squadron of the RAF (the famous Dambusters squadron) dropped the heaviest bomb of the war (22,000lb “Grand Slam”) on the Bielefeld railway viaduct. They honed their technique at the Derwent Dam in Derbyshire.
On 14th March 1960, plans for the Thames Barrier were announced.
