Ancient bones found in Suffolk

Bones which are centuries old have been found in a Suffolk river. A worker dredging the River Lark at West Row near Mildenhall made the find and alerted police.

The skull, and other remains, are believed to date back to between 1066 and 1540, but some experts believe they may be Roman or Saxon. Further examination of the skull showed it had been penetrated by an arrow or a spear.

Other bones included some from a young person, and also a 14th century metal buckle was among the finds.

The adult may have been killed in the battle at Fornham in 1173, but this is not confirmed.
